Pō Hiwa is definitely rural. We're next to a working dairy farm, and yep — there are bugs out here (some we'd never seen before...city folk, you've been warned ) But 2 of the most arachnophobic people we know stayed here — and not only did they survive, they loved it... Turns out, peace, fresh air and everything else can win over just about anyone... Just fyi, this is the only insect (of significance..) we've managed to get close enough to get a photo, so they really have no interest in us. It's a Clock Cicada (Kikihia horologium) because of the ticking sound it makes and according to @te_papa it's found in the Southern Elps of the South Island...go figure #pohiwa #clockcicada #farmlifereality #buglife #purenewzealand #uniquestay #awhitu

Just down the road from Pō Hiwa is this sacred place... Waimatuku or commonly known as Hamilton's Gap. There's plenty of history here, it was home to a major Māori settlement, apparently there's still remnants of old war structures hidden in the hill terraces... Hard to believe this wild rugged beach with its black sand is in the same peninsula...also that's the tip of the Waitakere Ranges you can see in the distance #hamiltonsgap #awhitupeninsula #destinationnz #uniqueaccommodation #microweddinglocation #containerconversion #pohiwa
